Medicaid Madness! (Day 242 of 365)

Thursday, July 22nd 2010

The last couple days have been fully maddening! Medicaid Madness!!! I received a letter in the mail (It must have come last week, while I was in Bermuda). It was a letter stating that the kids medicaid (insurance) is being cancelled due to me not filling out certain paperwork. My children receive SSI (Social Security Income) due to their disability, therefore they automatically are eligible for Medicaid. Well, I didn’t get the paperwork, therefore; it would be a challenge for me to fill out paperwork that I didn’t receive.

So, I trekked down to the Medicaid office yesterday afternoon. This office is located about 35-40 minutes from where I live in a very rough part of Las Vegas. It is not my favorite place to go that is for sure. After standing in line for nearly 45 minutes, I get to the window and the woman told me that my children’s caseload is completely closed (this has not happened in 17 years) and that I need to reopen a case by filling out a new application and she pointed to the desk to my left. I asked to speak to a supervisor, and she again pointed to the desk of applications to my left. I tried my usual persuasion (that at times I can be brilliant with) AND still nothing! After looking at the application I realized that it required some information in it that I did not have on me…so I knew then what I was doing this morning.

This morning I woke up and first things first I hustled down to the Medicaid office (another 35-40 minute drive) only to find the line out the door. It was 5 times as long as the 45 minute line I stood in yesterday….so I thought that after lunch would be a better time. I went on about my day and took care of some things that needed to be done and went back to the office about 2:30. I again waited, and was finally called. I met with the caseworker only to be told that some of the computer system had my old address, therefore; I was in the wrong office and the caseworker was going to mail the application to the other office and that the kiddos insurance wouldn’t be processed for another 45 days from the day that that office received the application. I again asked to speak to a supervisor only to be told that the office closer to my house would be the one I deal with. I asked for my paperwork back and headed to the other side of town AGAIN to get the process started immediately.

It was 4:45pm when I arrived at the Medicaid office by my home. I became excited when I walked in to see hardly any people waiting in line. Most people were gone for the day. When I was called, I began to first tell the man behind the counter that I didn’t receive the paperwork in the mail due to my address not being updated in the system. He looked at me and said..”give me your paperwork”, I handed the application to him…He looked at me and put his stamp on the papers. He pushed the large stamp down, and as I heard the clicking sound of the stamp dating the paperwork…He looked at me and said in a large robotic voice “NEXT!”

Ugggg…Need I say more?

Until “Next” Time,

E
