I just got home from a run to Smart & Final with the girls while Jorden was in his Karate class. We were at the check out and Taylor noticed that there was no bagger to bag the groceries, so without asking she promptly took the inititive upon herself to start bagging the groceries. I had a sudden realization to the fact that Taylor is old enough to have a job. If she was able to, she probably would have one now. I have mixed feelings on how I felt at that moment. I felt a hint of sadness because at this moment she is not able to experience what all other 17 year olds get to. So often I forget that she is 17. Also, I realized that she WILL be able to work and will be a darn good worker at any job she is given. She loves to be wanted! If you give her a job, she goes all out and does it happily! No one asked her to bag those groceries. She just did it! How many of us just do it in life? How many of us have to be asked?
If you are a parent to a teenager, I am asking you from parent to parent to please invite your child to read this:
Please let them know that they “get to” have the opportunity to do some great things in life like work, go to school, drive, hang out with their friends….others may not have the option to do these things as freely as they do. So on behalf of Taylor and me…tell them to kick butt and enjoy it all!
Until next time,
E
