Yesterday afternoon I received another call from the nurse’s assistant at Erin & Jorden’s school. Let me just set this story up by expressing that I really like the nurse and her assistant. The Assistant called me to inform me that Erin was much better and that my kiddos have been nominated for School Bell. If you don’t know what school bell is…it is a program that is designed in the Schools that will provide coats, shoes, clothing, etc. to children who do not have such items or come from homes that the caregivers are not able to provide for them. The nurse had called me and left a message to see if it was ok that they were nominated and to inform me she was sending the forms home. This got me thinking…so I called her back. I asked her why my children were nominated. Does someone think they aren’t dressed well enough, clean enough, fed enough?! I think that they go to school in pretty good shape myself! Well, it turns out that Erin had been wearing these tennis shoes that have holes in them every day. The shoes I had already gotten two other pair of shoes to replace them with,
Let me express my history and shoes for my children! I am not a fan of buying shoes. Due to my girls having Cerebral Palsy they both walk very awkward. They walk in such a way that it wears the soles out of their shoes. This causes them to go through a pair of shoes on an average of every 3 weeks (think $15-$20 for an average pair of shoes) AND they are not the easiest kiddos to take shopping for shoes! My mother had recently purchased some really nice winter boots with two-inch rubber soles for Erin. She had chosen those because she felt that they would last longer than the average tennis shoe. Erin wore the boots to school and her P.E teacher told her that she could no longer wear them to P.E. Well, apparently Erin took this quite seriously because when I have been leaving for work right before Erin & Jorden’s bus comes Erin takes her boots off and puts her tennis shoes back on.
Don’t get me wrong, I am very grateful that others are looking out for my kiddos. I kindly, said thank-you for the thought and we may have our time of struggles (like others have at times) but we are very blessed and I would rather for some other student who truly has nothing to be blessed with the opportunity for the items that the school can provide. So, needless to say…I watched Erin get on the bus today with her boots on!!!! She better not have some hidden “holy” tennis shoes somewhere else!
If you know any ideas about ever-lasting shoes…let me know…I would be ecstatic about finding a cure for 3 week “holy” shoes.
Until next time,
E
